BB: I am 24 years old and grew up in Seattle. I went to Washington State University. I have always loved painting, but I put it on the back burner so that I could focus on academics. I never thought art would lead to a career. No one ever explained that their are SO many jobs that require a BFA. In college I majored in communications with an emphasis in advertising, but took as many art classes as I could. I minored in art and art history. Now I work on a creative advertising team as an 8-5 job and do freelance illustration/ run my etsy shop on the side. I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD CALL MYSELF A FASHION ILLUSTRATOR but after a year of great collaborations and freelance projects I can. I have done illustrations for bareMinerals and Julep and it still blows my mind when I think about it.
ES: How did you get into sketching? Did you think that you'd have such a big reaction just by posting on Instagram?
BB: My Junior year I studied abroad in florence and took all art classes. One of my classes was called florence sketch book. The class was literally drawing all over Florence in our sketchbooks. One assignment was to draw as many paintings in the a museum as you could before class ended. Thats when i fell in love with sketching. I loved the quick quirky half drawn pieces more than anything I had ever taken a lot of time to paint.
If instagram was a person I would hug it and send it a billion thank you cards and flowers.
I started using instagram as a way to quickly upload pictures to tumblr. A few weeks ago an editor of harpersbazaar.com emailed me because she "saw my sketches on instagram." People make fun of hashtags but they are a very powerful tool. I think I can owe my feature on bazaar.com to a "hashtag" Harper'sBazaar.
ES: Where are your favorite places to shop?
BB: I LOVE topshop, Aritzia, Jcrew and Anthropologie... all for different reasons.
ES: What pair of shoes are you favorite? Why do you love them?!
BB: I have a pair of L.A.M.B thigh high boots that I found at Nordstrom Rack for a REALLY good deal. I don't have that many places to wear them to but they are hands down the coolest pair of shoes I own. Almost all of my drawings wear thigh high booties, I just think there is something really bad ass about them. I even chose to draw a few outfits where you are wearing your thigh highs... they are so fierce!
ES: Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
BB: I want to illustrate a Nordstrom Christmas Bag. It's a pretty big dream but I have learned that if you work hard a lot is obtainable! I also see myself having expanded my creative services beyond illustration hopefully to creative or art direction.
