Dressing for Your Fashion Internship

Every summer since high school, I've spent three months in New York City working for companies I have loved and admired forever. As I built my resume and real-world experience, my fashion sense evolved as well. I learned how to feel comfortable in a professional environment all while living in the big city and running tons of errands. I loved every second of it and cannot wait to begin my fashion career. For those of you about to head into your first or second major internship, there are a few things to keep in mind when getting dressed in the morning. Ignore what your parents say and over pack - bring too many shoes, an excessive amount of accessories and clothing you will be comfortable but totally happy in.

Your days will be long, your lunch breaks will be short but your outfits will be killer and you will have the best summer ever.

Busy Monday

You will be working nonstop during a typical work day which means comfort is key. I always found happiness in a simple skirt and cool tee. Tucked in and paired with the right accessories, this look is always safe yet stylish. I am a huge advocate of manicures especially since you can get one for $7 in the city which means you have no excuse to have dirty nails. Keep in mind that you'll be running all over the place, so a kitten heel is as high as you should go in terms of comfort. Your bag should be big yet easy to wear, it will be carrying your important items every day for the next few days so definitely splurge on a good one.

Tee: Etsy, $10, Skirt: Boohoo, $32, Shoes: Amazon, $159, Bag: Shopbop, $128, Sunglasses: Nasty Gal, $40, Nail Polish: Essie, $8.50

Regular Work Day

It's always important to put effort into what you wear, especially at a fashion internship. Remember that it will be hot and you will probably be running errands. Dress nicely and keep in mind that it isn't as glamorous as you thought it would be. Shorts that are an appropriate length go great with a casual t-shirt and over sized blazer. Be sure to pair this look with cool platforms that won't hurt your feet. After running around the city all day, your feet will hate you regardless of the height, so make sure you are comfortable, I cannot stress it enough.

Top: Warehouse, $46, Shorts: Miss Selfridge, $114, Blazer: New Look, $46, Shoes: New Look, $50, Bag: Harvey Nichols, $215, Sunglasses: Monki, $14, Lipstick: Topshop, $16

Casual Friday

Picture
Fridays will most likely be your casual, half days. This is the perfect time to dress a bit more relaxed and finally break out the boyfriend jeans. Paired with a chic long sleeve top, some edgy ankle boots and a bright bag, you'll be ready to go straight from work to dinner with your friends in the Meatpacking district.

Shirt: Jigsaw, $39, Jeans: Hollister, $100, Bag: Rebecca Minkoff, $225, Boots: New Look, $110, Sunglasses: ZeroUV, $10, Polish: Essie, $18

What's In Your Bag?

Finding the perfect "carry all" bag is the key to surviving any job. Whether you are spending three months in New York city, or really anywhere else, there are a few essential items that should be kept with you at all times. Everything listed can be found in my bag 24/7, especially while interning. In the fashion world, the days are long and hot which means you must be prepared at all times. Invest in a bag that can go great with any outfit and that is big enough to fit all of your things. Choose wisely and remember - a nice bag will last longer and look amazing with everything.

"Read More" to see why I keep the pictured items with me at all times.
Headphones - You'll be spending a lot of your time running errands and hopping from subway to subway. In order to keep your attitude and your energy up, listen to cheesy pop music that is sure to boost your mood. ($21, Shopbop)
Advil - It happens to the best of us and nothing is worse than having to go through the day with a pounding migraine. Keep Advil with you at all times just in case of an emergency.
Spare Charger - By using HopStop, listening to your iPod and Instagramming pictures, your phone will be dead before noon. Make sure you have a charger that you can plug your phone into at the office. ($32, Nasty Gal)
Wallet - Metro card, ID and debit cards are obviously needed at all times, this is a no brainer. ($150, Shopbop)
Chapstick - NYC and basically every other place gets scorching hot during the summer time. Pull your look together through out the day with Aquaphor. It's always my lifesaver
Granola Bar - You're going to get hungry at awkward times, before or after lunch. In order to avoid starvation during those late nights, pack smart and bring snacks.
Makeup Case - Your beauty look that was done that morning at 8am is not going to last 12 hours. Carry foundation and eye liner touch ups so that you'll be ready for drinks after work, regardless of how long your day is. ($38, Henri Bendel)
Compact Mirror - Your iPhone camera won't exactly show you everything. This is necessary for a subway makeup touch up. ($8, Sephora)
Gum - No one likes bad breath and everyone loves to chew gum.
Notebook - You're interning to learn and experience the real world. Take notes and keep observations. I have all of my notebooks from each internship experience and will cherish every word forever. ($12.95, Fab)
Pen - You obviously cannot take notes without a pen and it's always a great idea to be prepared. ($15, kikki.K)
Satchel - A chic alternative to a messenger backpack and it comes in a bunch of different designs. As an owner of two, it is worth the splurge. ($500, The Corner)
