It seems as if the Europeans have been way ahead of the game all my life. They start the trends that ultimately cross the ocean, wearing something or some combination that does not make it to the United States fashion consciousness until years later. There's something about the sophisticated European style to which I am drawn. Hoping you feel the same way, today allow Soul in Stilettos to introduce Phil & Lui to you.
Phil & Lui is a German brand based in Munich. Founded by a seriously gorgeous couple, they focus on earth-friendly fashion that can be worn by men and women. The two designers have nailed the laid back, yet sexy look and are sharing their inspiration, their collection and everything else that goes into this company.

P&L: We are Philipp and Luisa. After studying Fashion Design (Lui) and Sinology, the study of Chinese language, history, customs, and politics, (Phil) we decided to try and do something good. We have been a couple for six years now and have developed a true will to establish sustainable fashion in nowadays world. We are based Munich, Germany.
SIS: You focus on sustainability. How is that applied to fashion? What are the challenges and what are the benefits?
P&L: One of the challenges is definitely finding the right suppliers that are willing to realize sophisticated designs like our reversible unisex shirt according to sustainable guidelines. At the same time, sustainability is not our flagship. Instead, it is our personal need and basic requirement. It’s not easy to be part of an industry that has forgotten certain values. These values include respect towards nature and also the people that are involved in creating apparel.
SIS: The style and aesthetic of Phil & Lui are not only cool, but utterlyoriginal and chic. Where do you find inspiration?
P&L: It all starts with visuals and getting hold of a mood that expresses a certain feeling. Based on this feeling, we create a written philosophy to question the origin and scale of it. Finally, the design comes and mirrors the message from an apparel point of view. For us it’s all about the details.
P&L: The fact that the shirt is unisex and reversible makes it unique. It has several features that make you want to look at the details. You should have it in your closet, because you can choose the way you wear it according to the way you feel. Keep it simple and straight with the plain side or give it more movement and structure with the print side. Having the philosophy in mind, our “Blue Effect” shirt is more a statement than a simple piece of cloth.
SIS: What is it like being a fashion brand based in Germany? I’ve yet to travel there, but I’ve only heard wonderful things.
P&L: Well, as a fashion brand I think it’s neither harder or easier in Germany than in any other country. Since we literally do everything completely by ourselves, the amount of work is really intense. We are fully dedicated to this vision. We want to give people insight and therefore, we aim to create a joint spirit. We use the aesthetics of images as a common language to reach out and get in touch with our customer.
SIS: Of course, you are hoping to grow and expand. Where do you see the brand in five years?
P&L: In five years, we want to be as devoted and motivated as we are right now. We are driven by the imagination of a borderless and creative think tank. We love the energy that emerges from truly unique collaborations, connecting ideas and realizing creative things. In the future we hope to have the capacity that allows us to reinforce somewhat forgotten values and bring about some mutual teamwork. That requires careful growth through the commitment of talented people who share our vision.
P&L: The brand 1924 inspires us. We love the aesthetics of their use of images.
SIS: Last but not least, the Phil & Lui customer lives in which pair of shoes?!
P&L: Tough question. The best styles are the ones that remain versatile. Just like the shirt, how it is unisex and reversible. The customer might wear a pair of worn out boots with a history or even a pair of fancy high heels, giving the style a cool cross-over look.
